Plotline & Characters

Triggering event: On their daughters’ eighteenth birthday, conservative Chen Weiguo (played by Yue Yang) and free-spirited Zhou Fang (played by Hai Yitian) find themselves unexpectedly teaming up to find their daughters—Chen Xiaoyu (Zhang Yitong) and Zhou Xiaoxiao (Xu Bin)—after they run away.

Road-trip journey: Guided by clues left by the girls, the fathers endure a series of absurd encounters:

Mistakenly entering a street dance competition at Haikou night market;

Chasing a suspicious vehicle through Wenchang’s coconut groves on a dilapidated tricycle;

Being “detained” by local villagers and forced to help with farming.

Turning point: During the trip, the two fathers move from mutual blame to understanding the limitations of their parenting styles. At the cliffside of Tonggul Ling, upon finding their daughters, they complete a transformation from “controllers” to “companions.”

Production notes and social ties

Pitch to production: Endorsed as the “most Hainan‑element project” at the 2022 Golden Rooster Pitching Conference, the film received support from the Hainan Provincial Party Committee’s Propaganda Department. Art direction deliberately contrasts local cultural symbols—Chen Weiguo’s striped polo shirt versus Zhou Fang’s floral shirt—to symbolize the clash between conservative and free-spirited values.

Release plan: The film premiered in mainland China on June 28, 2025, with a runtime of 98 minutes.

Performance & realistic symbolism

Yue Yang vs. Hai Yitian: Yue Yang uses subtle physical cues (e.g. clutching his wallet tightly, frequently checking his watch) to convey an anxious father figure, while Hai Yitian’s comedic performance (such as injuring his back during an impromptu street-dance move) subverts the strict father archetype and generates comedic tension.

Youth‑generation perspective: Zhang Yitong and Xu Bin as the daughters appear only at the beginning and end, their presence relayed via prerecorded video clues that drive the narrative—symbolizing adolescents’ desire for parents to “seek understanding rather than exert control.”

Regional cultural value

The film has become a new vehicle for Hainan tourism culture:

A comedic conflict scene set at the “Qing Buliang” snack stall in Haikou’s arcade street showcases everyday local life;

The coconut groves chase scene in Wenchang is captured with aerial shots highlighting the tropical rainforest environment;

The final scene at Tonggul Ling features a sunrise, symbolizing a rebirth of the parent–child relationship.
