Biography
Born Zhang Jiawei in Wuxi on December 30, 1997, he later rebranded himself professionally as Zhang Linghe for better memorability. Though academically grounded—excelling in physics and electrical engineering at Nanjing Normal University—his trajectory shifted when a casting agent spotted him working as a production assistant on a campus film shoot. Intrigued by the camera and storytelling, he transitioned into acting in 2020, beginning his career behind the scenes as a script assistant and production coordinator before stepping in front of the lens.
His first major on-screen role came that same year in Maiden Holmes, a three‑episode costume‑romance web drama released on Tencent Video, where he portrayed Prince Qi (Pei Zhao). His confident demeanour and photogenic presence quickly garnered public attention. Later in 2020, he starred in Sparkle Love, a youth romance series on Mango TV, playing "Mai Sichong"—a role that established him firmly in the teen‑idol category.
In 2021, Zhang expanded his range with the urban romance Joyful Grown-ups, and the boarding-school drama Flourish in Time, where he played the aloof student Jiang Haoyue opposite Deng Enxi’s energetic heroine. Both series aired on leading platforms iQIYI and Tencent Video, helping him transition from fluff to more grounded dramatic fare.
His breakout came in 2022 with the fantasy romance Love Between Fairy and Devil (based on a novel), in which he portrayed Chang Heng, the god of war. Though a supporting character, his understated strength and chemistry with leads earned him critical notice within the growing yet crowded xianxia genre.
2023 marked Zhang's first leading roles as Gong Ziyu in My Journey to You, and as Xie Wei in the palace drama Story of Kunning Palace—a dual‑personality character grappling with court intrigue and love. The latter adaptation was widely praised across Mainland China and showcased his growing emotional range.
In The Princess Royal (2024), Zhang took centre stage as Chancellor Pei Wen Xuan in a palace romance riddled with fate and time travel. His reunion with co-star Zhao Jinmai built on their chemistry from earlier works, and the role solidified his status as a leading man in costume drama circles.
By 2025, Zhang had crossed into mainstream modern romances. In The Best Thing, he plays Dr. He Su Ye opposite Xu Ruohan, exploring the growth of a professional relationship into a lasting bond. Most notably, he leads in the youth romance Our Generation (Chinese title Cherry Amber), playing Jiang Qiao Xi, whose slow‑burn relationship with Lin Qile (played by Zhao Jinmai) became a mid‑summer hit on Youku in July 2025—widely praised for its warm, nostalgic storytelling and cameos from reality show stars.
Zhang’s acting style is often described as low‑tension charisma—he conveys emotional weight subtly rather than through overacting. Directors repeatedly cite his prior background in film production as helping him deliver more grounded and realistic portrayals.
Off‑screen, Zhang has been a staple at major youth‑oriented awards and fan‑voted events such as Weibo Night, the Starry Youth Actor Programme, and Make‑Me Star Awards. In 2021, he received the "New Power" award at the 5th Golden Bud Awards; subsequently, he was featured in multiple youth‑star rankings in 2022 and 2023.
In interviews, he has acknowledged that rapid rise doesn’t guarantee lasting success, stressing that integrity, role selection, and consistency of quality will determine longevity. His fan base has grown steadily—from an initial base of yesteryear’s internet‑drama viewers to general‑audience fans drawn in by The Princess Royal and Our Generation.
From 2023 onwards, Zhang began expanding into variety shows—appearing on Youth Trip Season 4 and Begin Reasoning, and even performing at major events like New Year’s galas and awards shows as a guest singer. These high‑profile appearances helped him cross into both teen and adult audiences.
In early 2025, he announced the formation of a solo personal studio, marking his transition from talent under agency control to a hybrid artist‑brand. This move reflects a new trend among young Chinese stars to take control of endorsements, investments, and career planning. Standing at 188 cm with a technical university background, Zhang now combines aesthetic appeal with cerebral credentials—an image increasingly appealing in China’s tightly‑filtered market.
In summary, Zhang Linghe represents a modern breed of Chinese actor who bridges visual idol appeal and acting skill, surmounting the idol archetype through steadily escalating roles—from aristocratic princes to contemporary professionals. He continues to alternate between costume epics and youth romance dramas, solidifying his status as a versatile and future‑proof talent in the Chinese entertainment industry.
